What does a replacement car key actually cost?
Straight answer — it depends. Key type is just one piece of the puzzle. Here’s what we look at before we can give you an accurate figure.
Key Type
Standard blade keys are the most straightforward. Remote keys sit in the middle. Proximity keys cost more due to the additional hardware and programming complexity involved. But key type alone doesn’t determine the final price — everything below plays a part too.
Vehicle Security System
Every vehicle is different under the bonnet. Whether the alarm is active or inactive, the type of immobiliser fitted, and how many ECUs need to be accessed all affect complexity. Some vehicles require us to work across multiple control units to successfully programme a key.
Programming Method — OBD or EEPROM
Some vehicles can be programmed directly via the OBD port — fast and straightforward. Others require EEPROM-level access, meaning we work directly with the vehicle’s memory chip. This is more involved and is reflected in the price.
Instrument Cluster Type
Analogue or digital speedometer — it sounds unrelated, but the cluster type directly affects how we access and programme certain immobiliser systems, particularly on newer vehicles.
Third Party Services
Certain vehicles require additional services to complete programming — pin code extraction, manufacturer file requests, or third party password services. Where these are needed, the cost is passed on transparently with no markup.
Dealer Software & Token Costs
Some vehicles require manufacturer-level software to complete programming or coding — and that access isn’t free. Certain platforms charge per-use tokens or session fees consumed the moment we connect to your vehicle. Where this applies, the cost is included in your quote upfront so there are no surprises.
All Keys Lost
If you have no working key at all, the process is more complex. Depending on the vehicle’s security system, we may need to access several ECUs rather than just one to successfully programme a new key from scratch.
